Training Services

Combining horsemanship and performance, Schultz Performance Horsemanship provides quality horse training services for horses of all breeds and disciplines. Our training program revolves around teaching the horse in a way that they can understand, which accelerates their learning and produces lasting results. The key behind our training philosophy is customization. Customizing a horse’s training to fit his future career equips him with the tools he will need to excel, and yields far better results than a one-size-fits-all training regimen. We also firmly believe in honest and open communication with our clients – we want you to be involved and in the know regarding your horse’s progress!

+ Who will be training my horse while in training at Schultz Performance Horsemanship?

Hannah Schultz does 100% of the training with your horse and every horse is worked with 5-6 days a week. You do not have to worry about your horse’s foundation being dependent on the experience level of a hired assistant or intern. Hannah does not show, only traveling intermittently for private lessons or clinics. Any missed days of training are made up or reflected in your monthly invoice.

+ Am I allowed to see my horse or watch a training session while he is in training?

Yes! We have an open door policy, meaning you are more than welcome to come visit or see your horse while he is at our facility, or schedule a time to come watch a training session and see your horse’s progress! We also include 1 private lesson (optional) per month of training to ensure success when you take your horse home. In other words, we want you to be as involved as you would like to be!

+ What is the required amount of training required for my young horse to be started under saddle?

We require a minimum time window of 90 days (3 months) for colt starting. This amount of time gives the horse enough consistency and concentrated training to establish good habits and solidify his foundation. However, we always suggest investing in a 4th month if possible because it allows the horse to get even more mileage and experience under his belt. We also use this time to focus the horse’s training toward your personal ambitions or his intended use or discipline.

+ I live significantly far away and can't haul the horse myself. Are there any other options for me?

Yes, we work with numerous reputable equine haulers and can help arrange transport for your horse to and from our facility. We accept horses from all over the country, and it is common practice for owners who live far away to send horses via transport.

+ What are the costs?

Cost of foundation training is $1,330.00/month, which includes board/feed/care, training 5-6 days a week, and 1 complimentary lesson with you and your horse.

 Behavioral Problem Training

If your horse is aggressive, over-reactive, fearful, dangerous, or simply not behaving how you would like on the ground or under saddle, we can help! Most often, these behaviors occur due to miscommunication or lack of a foundation in the horse's training. Some problems are simply irritating, such as: not standing still to mount, being difficult to lead, pulling back when tied, head shy problems, refusing to trailer load, builds speed, or won't stop.  Other problems escalate into dangerous behavior, like bucking, bolting, rearing, striking/kicking, and spooking. We have the knowledge, skills, and extensive experience to alleviate these problems, and also prioritize working with the owner to prevent them from reoccurring.

+ How physically intense is your training program?

We treat every horse as an individual, and carefully monitor their workload based on age and physical shape, as well as what they can physically and mentally handle. If the horse has had a past injury or existing soundness issue, we come up with a plan to train as effectively as possible without compromising the comfort of the horse. In general, we strive to train horses through communicating and getting through to their mind – not by wearing them out physically or making them tired in order to learn new concepts. Although certain parts of training are physical, we balance it with rest and as a result, we very rarely have injuries or soundness issues.

+ Can you guarantee that my horse’s behavioral problem can be fixed?

While we can fix the majority of behavioral problems, every once in a while there will be a severe case that can only be improved to a certain extent, or the issue cannot be 100% resolved. Usually, these horses are older and have a very ingrained habit that has been developed over a long period of time. Or, sometimes the combination of traits and temperament of the horse make it undependable and unpredictable – resulting in a dangerous situation. We always try to be up front and honest with the owner as soon as possible on whether the behavior can be fixed and the estimated training time that it will take.

+ Do you accept stallions in for training?

Yes, we are fully equipped to train and board stallions, and do so on a regular basis.

+ What are the costs?

Cost for behavioral problem training is typically $1230.00/month, which includes board/feed/care, training 5-6 days a week, and 1 complimentary lesson with you and your horse. However, cost may vary depending on the severity of the behavioral problem and the risk and training time involved.
